End of an era in the real LA club Scene
Clubs in Los Angeles are dime a dozen. However clubs that have substance and produce the best sounds\talent definitely don't come from the velvet rope,300 dollar bottle of vodka clubs. Rather they are down in the nitty gritty heart of downtown LA and surrounding area. Here at these places there are no stiff dress codes or snooty door men. Instead you come in to a place where social status is meaningless and the music is what really matters.
After going on strong well over 10+ years each, two of the best running clubs (Firecraker & The RootDown) in Los Angeles are coming to an end. These were the places to be heard rather than to be seen. I have had the pleasure to see so much talent perform at both these clubs and am really sad to see them come to an end. But when one chapter ends another begins and I'm sure those who were behind these legendary clubs will be back with something great for 2010 and beyond.
So I would like to extend my thanks to The Firecracker and The RootDown for the many fun nights filled with great music, people and positive vibes. Big ups to The Breakestra, Azul, This Kid Named Miles,DJ Sloe Poke, Kutmah, Loslitos, Praise one, Coleman,Alfred Hawkins and most of all DJ DUSK R.I.P.

Leo Limon's "LA River Cats"
I can clearly remember my first encounter with LA graffiti that really had an impact on me. At the tender young age of 4, I remember driving in our 1981 Volvo down the 5 freeway near Atwater Villiage\Los Feliz area and my Father pointing out the cat paintings on all the storm drain covers.
From then on I was amazed at the world of art work along the freeways. Whenever I would ask questions about it I would get hushed off about it by my mom who would just say "It's just stupid things that Cholos do". Which would then leave me with a unanswered question that I would go on to figure out on my own some years later, even at one point doing it myself.
However thinking back about it when the topic of LA River art came up recently in a conversation with a friend. I wanted to know who was the person behind these Cats from my youth that I remember so vividly. So I did a quick search and found out his name is Leo Limon.
Leo Limon has a place in the history of modern Chicano Art in the Los Angles area and still lives in East LA. . His work was heavly influenced by Los Four and his presence in the commnity spans 30 years. Still active in the art community, Limon has helped establish the Aztlan Cultural Arts Foundation.

See Huitzilopochtli
I found this poor little guy outside my office at work. It seems that it has a hurt or broken wing. I'm going to see if I can take care of it until it gets better. Any suggestions? If I don't get any, I will take it to the pound.

2009 BET Awards
I dont watch BET let alone pay any mind to their award shows. I came across this video from this years awards which features cyphers being led by DJ Premier looping the break from James Brown's Funky Drummer. BET was once a great place for real Hip Hop but it now lacks any content that worth mentioning. So it was a suprise to see them put out something like this on thier award show.

Rabbits and Carrots...
It appears that the funky styles of James Brown and Charles Wright surely made their way across the US borders. Coming from the heart of Mexico's D.F. comes Rabbits and Carrots. Don't let the name fool you as these guys lay down some heavy Spanish covers of funk classics.

Chico Mann...
Chico Mann is no new comer to the New York Music scene as he's been playing lead guitar for one of my favorite Afrobeat groups "The Antibalas". Chico Mann's Afrobeat roots are clearly present with a flare of classic electro sounds that only old school Casio keys can produce. He's has a few EP's (Manifest Tone Vols.1-3) as well as a handful of singles. I was able to catch one of his live performances on his brief west coast visit well over a year ago and I was blown away. He clearly sets a great vibe and make you move with his vibrant classic yet new sounds. I look forward to his next west coast visit, as he's hinted that it may be some time in the near future.

Fixed Gear...
There has been a lot of hoop-la about fixed geared bike these days and some see it as new phenomena. However fixed gear bikes have been around well over 100 years now. Also fixed gear track bike racing preempts automobile racing by a long shot and even deemed Major Taylor the first African American to become world champion in the history of competitive sport racing. So there is a lot of history behind these bikes. I myself have yet to ride a fixed gear bike or "Fixie" for short but recently it has gained more of my respect. Even some of the BMX companies like Volume, Subrosa and SE have jumped in and put out fixie frame and complete bikes. Although my love for BMX can not be changed, I look forward to building a Fixie pretty soon. So I'll keep you posted on my new venture as it begins.

Rey Fresco....
Rey Fresco hails from Ventura Cali and have generated quite a buzz on the indie music scene. These guys produce a unique sound that is comparable to no other band out right now. Around this time last year I saw them perform at the Pasadena Jazz Institute and was blown away by their talented blend of music.
